Particle Playground: Ice

Posted on 25. Nov, 2007 by Jerzy Drozda Jr in After Effects

Christmas are coming so it’s about time I show you how to create nice snow that will stick to the layers that you have in your composition.

While shooting footage for this tutorial Georges butt almost fell of because of the very low temperature. But hey… we’ll do anything for all of you boys and girls watching ours tutorials. Thankfully after drinking 10 cups of hot tea everything was back to normal.

In this experiment George and I will show you how you can create a snow falling from the sky. And if that wasn’t enough we are going to show you how to make the snow stick to the rooftops, cars standing on the streets, logos, or even actors in your footage.

And we even have a small challenge for you. After watching this tutorial try to create a custom shaped snowflake particle, or even few snowflake shapes.

Make sure to see the related tutorial: Particle Playground on Fire

I wonder if you came up with it just for Christmas or you needed that in your Bruteforce project?

Actually… I’m a flash developer also, and I used to do things like that when I was playing around, and the ideas for Particle Playground on Fire and Particle Playground on Ice came from my very old experiments, just like one of my first tutorials – Oily Stratum, that was also inspired by flash.

    Hey Maltaannon,
Thanks for everything. I like how in most of these tutorials, and I mean tutorials in general off of creative cow and what not, the creators always seem to think they are comedians.
what wit, I do prefer one liners so if you watch some Mitch Hedberg it will save time on the witty banter that I do so much enjoy.

Czesc. Its the best Tutorials that I ever seen. Cause you record them ,so its easy to leran it step for step! But for beginners it would be good to know thekey- shortcuts that you use, cause sometimes its hard to understand. Keep up the good work!

I followed your tutorial step by step, but for some reason the snow does not fall, it just spawns randomly on the screen, and does not move. I only seem to have this problem when I apply the X and Y speed to Red and Green. I’m doing this on an NTSC based machine, if it helps.

Really hard to say, NTSC has nothing to do with it. My guess is that somehow you missed something. Find me on Skype. If I’ll find some time we’ll work on it.
