Interactive motiongraphics

Posted on 30. Jun, 2008 by Jerzy Drozda Jr in Blog

I just got involved in a project that requires interactive motiongraphics. It’s very interesting since it goes beyond AE. Funny thing is that many years ago when I just started to be a cinemaniac I actually wanted to do something like this for the living.

I’m sopoused to create graphics, fake operating systems and presentations. It’s about making all computer related graphics for a new TV series that is being made here in Poland, so whenever a computer screen is seen in the show – it’s my work.

The problem is that they cannot use existing operating systems and application in the show like Microsoft Windows, MacOS, MS Word or Adobe AE, so they have to fake it. I thought this will be very cool project to be involved in, since it requires all the graphics to be interactive, so that the actor or actress can actually do something, like write a text document, open a presentation, print stuff and log into the system.

Obviously AE is not enough, so I’m moving the whole project to Adobe Flash. I’ll probably publish everything as Adobe AIR applications. I’m guessing that no one told me (or no one knows) whether or not they are going to use PC or Macs.

Anyways… the fake operating system I’m creating right now is called PhoenixOS and it’s theme color is light blue. I’m really enjoying this project. The only downside is the deadline – tomorrow morning. Basically I have 10 hours left to design, animate and script everything. It’ll be hard, but nothing I can’t manage.

I’ll make sure to post some screenshots and animations when I’m finished as long as I’m going to get a permission to do that. One way or the other I believe some cool tutorials will be born thanks to this project.

Wish me luck.

congratulatins that you managed it creating this little fake operating system in that small limited time. i would really enjoy flash tutorials, because i just recognized how powerfull flash can be, mainly in combination with AIR, so i would love to enhance my knowledge about this programm! So: After your training dvd is done and sold at pretty much anyone in this world (including me) sit down and record some really cool Flash tuts. got it? :D:D

now this is to late but Im working w/ flash. And you should do a projector file. and allow fullScreen. I dont know if you’re doing it in AS2.0 or AS3.0 but anyway. that would be perfect. it fits the whole screen and stuff.. maybe take away “esc” key so they (participants) cant escape fullscreen mode. anyway good luck to you man.

I hope you didn’t make that look primitive and unbeliveble like it’s usually done in movies. I mean buttons so big, they cover half of the screen or even something better – a progress bar while transfering money from one bank account to another :)

So what exactly TV show is that for?

I’m afraid I can’t really tell… yet. And no… it looks real, but for aparent reasons some icons are a bit bigger then the usual, but still… looks pretty cool.

Last year I did something like that but fortunately dont involve the interactive thing. Just short videos of the screen aplications: a chat, a powerpoint presentation, torrent client.
